THIRD GRADE WEEKLY NEWSLETTER
September 8-12, 2008
Reading/Lang. Arts: This week we will read a story called “Grandfather’s Journey.” The skills we will practice are vocabulary, comprehension, table of contents, story elements, making predictions, and compound words.
In Grammar we will practice daily skills by identifying what a sentence is, and how to write and identify statements and questions.
Math: We began learning about fact families with addition and subtraction, addends and sums. This week we will learn two digit addition and subtraction. Please practice addition/subtraction facts with your child daily. There are many students who forgot their facts over the summer!
We will continue these skills this week and possibly be ready for a test on Friday, Sept. 12th.
Spelling: This past week we took tests on high frequency words. This week we will continue the high frequency words, as well as begin our first unit with short vowel words.
Science: We will continue a unit on animal ecosystems, habitats, and food chains this week.
Social Studies: We have been working on using a compass rose to find direction. This week we will be learning about the seven continents and the four oceans. If time permits, I would like to begin our first chapter on Communities and the three different types of communities people choose to live.
Religion: We will continue the chapter about God’s creation this week and discuss ways in which we are responsible in taking care of His creation. We will be making a creation quilt to demonstrate some of His great works.
