Holy Rosary Parish Council October 15, 2007
The meeting was called to order at 7:05 p.m. Present: Tim Shininger, Father Dick Fleischmann, Joe Klein, Bernadette Ruckdaschel, Chris Geiser, Jim Lippe, Dan Schommer, and Jo Ann Wagner. Excused: Art Ternes and Phil Lundman.
Prayer: The opening prayer was led by Bernadette.
Minutes: Minutes from the September 17, 2007, Parish Council meeting were approved on a MOTION by Bernadette, seconded by Dan, and carried.
Prayer and Worship: The next Tri-Parish Prayer and Worship meeting is October 23rd.
Human Concerns: Joe reported on the last two meetings. Over 600 items were collected for the food pantry, more announcements will be made at mass and in the bulletin regarding projects the Human Concerns committee is doing, the Gift-a-Child program continues with announcements made October 27/28; sign up November 3/4, and gifts due November 24/25. The St. Mary’s Ozaukee free clinic will be requesting a contribution of $6,000 from Ozaukee County parishes ($1,200 from our cluster) for a part-time or full time nurse. More volunteers are needed to help with funeral dinners. Because of privacy laws, names of people that are ill cannot be put in the bulletin unless requested by a family member.
Finance: The profit and loss statement through September was reviewed. Contributions from weekly envelopes was down significantly in September. The capital building expenses are shown in account 4740. There will be additional costs in October. All bathrooms have now been updated, the classrooms are finished, and the committee is now working on the Sacrificial Giving Campaign. It was suggested that the additional envelope for utilities be included with each packet of envelopes. The bid process and how capital projects are completed was then discussed. Unless in an emergency, projects are approved by the Parish Council, but not micro managed by the council. In most cases, the committee having oversight of the project will solicit bids. Many projects are completed with volunteer help, or work is completed by professionals at a greatly reduced cost because they are parish members. Although the elevator requires monthly maintenance, it is well worth the cost and is used frequently. Money has not been spent recklessly, but needed capital improvements have been made.
Buildings and Grounds: The classrooms have been finished. Regular maintenance continues and things need to be ready for winter. The rooms downstairs turned out well and the upstairs looks like three rooms. One fan at the Holy Cross chapel burned out. They may want to replace all the fans and are looking for people to donate. The cost of a cordless “speaker system” for allowing access to the school will be investigated. Fans will be installed in the bathrooms at the residence at Holy Cross.
Education: The Education Committee met last week. Because of the improvements made to the school, most of the students from third grade and up were retained. The Home and School Association raised more money last year than was required, and used the excess funds to purchase items from the teacher’s “wish list”. The committee also discussed if non-parish members should be charged a higher tuition fee. This would affect about five students. No changes were made at this time. Preliminary numbers for the Silent Auction are more than last year. A committee has been established to hire a new principal for next year. There is a job description and an ad will be placed in the paper. The possibility of a shared principal position was discussed.
Pastor’s Report: On December 16, 2007, installation of Father Guy and Father Dick as co-pastors will take place at the 10:00 a.m. mass at Random Lake. All three parish council presidents need to attend. On October 27 a Leadership Conference on Planning will be held which may affect clustering of parishes and schools. The mission trip to Gay Mills now has plenty of projects.
Old Business - Parish Photographs: Tim is working on getting information. This will be discussed again at the next meeting.
Parish Festival: Announcements have been made, but there has not been any response. The Sacrificial Giving form will also ask for volunteers. The Home and School Committee has discussed making involvement in the festival a volunteer option. The festival committee would be able to decide if they would want it to be a picnic or some other type of event. Tents and rides have tentatively been reserved for June 21, 2008, as has the Holy Cross Chapel.
Prayer: Prayer was led by Bernadette.
Next Meeting: The next Parish Council meeting will be November 19, 2007. Tim will not be able to make this meeting so Chris will chair the meeting.
The meeting adjourned at 8:30 p.m.
Respectfully Submitted:
Jo Ann Wagner Secretary
