Holy Rosary Parish Council
February 18, 2008
The meeting was called to order at 7:05 p.m. Council members present: Tim Shininger, Father Dick, Phil Lundman, Art Ternes, Joe Klein, Bernadette Ruckdashel, Don Hamm, Jim Lippe, Dan Schommer, and Jo Ann Wagner. Arriving later: Chris Geiser
Minutes: Minutes of the January 21, 2008, Parish Council meeting were approved as presented on a MOTION by Bernadette, seconded by Dan, and carried.
Prayer and Worship: Phil reported on the Prayer and Worship Committee meeting. It was suggested that a 4:00 or 4:30 mass be held at Holy Cross the day of the festival. They were not sure about a Polka Mass as Lake Church is having a polka mass the week after the festival. Currently there was not much enthusiasm from the committee about changing the Saturday night mass to 8:00 p.m. during daylight savings time. Don noted that sometimes farm families are unable to make the current scheduled masses. Stations of the Cross were discussed but no changes were made.
Human Concerns: No meeting was held.
Finance: No meeting was held.
Buildings and Grounds: Dan reported that a defibrillator has been installed at Rosemary School and also at Holy Cross Chapel. With the recent storm, ice build up caused water in the basement - the same room as was damaged last year. The school was also broken into again. The doors to the offices were kicked in and a laptop computer and various other items were stolen. Three new solid core doors have been installed. This will be covered by insurance except for a $1,000 deductible. The laptop has been recovered by the Sheriff’s Department, but has not yet been returned. Purchase of a security system was discussed. Estimated cost is $500 upfront cost and $40 to $50 monthly charge for monitoring. After discussion, a MOTION was made by Jim, seconded by Phil, to investigate the cost of a security system for both office doors and the entryway and if the cost is $500 or less, and the monthly charge is $50 or less, to approve purchase of the system. Jim will check into this. The Home and School Association will be asked to purchase a safe for Scrip. The Parish will replace the door.
A job description for a part time maintenance position is still being created.
Education: Five applications have been received so far for the school principal position. Applications are being taken until March 15th. The committee will also interview the principal from Random Lake and Lake Church to explore the possibility of combining the principal position with that of another school. The school enrollment is declining. Father Dick noted that there are still quite a few that are undecided. The committee has also discussed various fund raising activities. Art noted that some kids are not returning because of financial issues. The school tries to stay competitive with teacher salaries which generally increase 3% each year.
Pastor’s Report: Father Dick noted that everyone helps and a positive outlook is maintained.
Parish Photographs: Tim will follow up with Olan Mills and will check with other parishes that have used them. Random Lake has already hired someone locally.
Parish Festival: Sign up sheets are located in the back of the church. Jim Lippe will chair the festival. Joan Steffen and Nancy Schmit will chair the games, Bernadette will chair the raffle, Art will chair the beer stand, and Hamm will chair the food stand. A polka mass was discussed, but not approved. Mass will be held at Holy Cross at 4:00 p.m. The festival will start around 4:00 p.m. Bernadette had raffle tickets for the council members and will be distributing them at the fish fry and after mass next weekend. Phil suggested that some type of "ticket" be created with the date and time for the festival so these could be distributed. (Chris arrived)
Tri-Parish Plan Committee Survey: The survey has been finalized and should be mailed out next week. Surveys will also be available after mass in back of each chapel.
New Business: Dan noted that it is very slippery on the west side of the church going to the parking lot. Dan will check with Brunner who plows the lot to see if salt (or sand) could be added to the area.
Chris stated that he has been contacted regarding the road leading out of the Holy Cross Cemetery is not being plowed. Anyone driving in needs to back out. This will be referred to the Cemetery Committee.
Closing Prayer: The closing prayer was led by Phil
Next Meeting: The next meeting will be March 17, 2008.
The meeting adjourned at 8:20 p.m.
