Holy Rosary Parish Council

March 17, 2008

The meeting was called to order at 7:08 p.m. Council members present: Tim Shininger, Father Dick Fleischman, Phil Lundman, Art Ternes, Joe Klein, Bernadette Ruckdashel, Don Hamm, Dan Schommer, and Jo Ann Wagner. Arriving later: Chris Geiser.

Opening Prayer: The opening prayer was led by Dan.

Minutes: Minutes of the February 18, 2008, Parish Council meeting were approved as presented on a MOTION by Dan, seconded byBernadette , and carried.

Prayer and Worship: No meeting was held.

Human Concerns: Joe reported on the Human Concerns meeting. Nineteen recipients will receive Easter flowers. These are individuals in nursing homes, assisted living, and homebound. Five hundred fifty-one cans of soup were collected for the Food Pantry. Other Lenten projects continue.

Finance: A combined Finance Committee meeting will be held in the future to discuss the status of each parish and school, and to plan for the future.

Buildings and Grounds: Dan reported that many small jobs have been completed but they need to decide what to do on the south side of the building where the water from the roof splashes on the lower sill and runs between the brick and inside wall. The outside bricks will also need tuck pointing. The second sump pump in the boiler room will be checked to see if this could be connected to the area where water is entering the wall and then be pumped out. A list of maintenance jobs was given to Tim.

Art reported that a request has been received to have a First Communion party at St. Mary’s Little Kohler. This would require the building to be "opened" earlier than usual. (Chris arrived) The individual requesting use is no longer a parish member, however, they do belong to the parish cluster and other family members still belong to the Holy Rosary Parish. Currently the archdiocese requires an insurance policy for any non-parish event. After lengthy discussion, a MOTION was made by Phil, seconded by Art, to "unwinterize" St. Mary’s Little Kohler, to allow use of the facility by a non-parish member for the First Communion party and to require them to obtain the facility insurance at a cost of $95. Motion carried. The council noted that based on the information available and policy at the time of the request, Parish Secretary Katie Hackl’s response was appropriate. A written policy will be created for use of parish facilities by non-members and for "winterizing" and "opening" of Little Kohler Chapel. These policies will include responsibility for clean up and an "appeal" process. (Chris left)

Education: Concern was expressed over the low enrollment in K-3 and K-4.

Pastor’s Report: Father Dick asked for volunteers to have their feet washed Thursday night. Tim volunteered. The school at Lake Church will remain open. (Father Dick left)

Parish Photographs: Tim stated that parish photographs will be scheduled for fall. He is still checking into photographers.

Parish Festival: Bingo may be added to the festival. If a license is obtained Bernadette suggested that Bingo be held a few additional times. It was suggested that a chili dinner and Bingo be held in November and/or December. Joe will check with the Lions Club to see if they still have their Bingo cards and equipment. Raffle ticket information will be sent home with the school kids informing their parents that raffle tickets will not be mailed but can be picked up at the parish office or in back of church after mass.

Tri-Parish Council Survey: The Tri-Parish Council survey has been mailed. The survey was drafted by the Tri-Parish Council and reviewed by each parish cluster parish council. Additional surveys will be available in church the last weekend of March. Survey results will be tallied and shared with the parishes.

Parish Council Nominations: Nominations for the three parish council positions will be requested the first weekend in April. The three positions opening are Joe Klein, Art Ternes, and Jo Ann Wagner. Nominations will be returned by April 27th, with voting in May.

Closing Prayer: The closing prayer was led by Dan.

Next Meeting: The next meeting will be April 21, 2008.

The meeting adjourned at 8:55 p.m.
